After Service: A Veteran's Perspective on Civilian Transition and Success
When Veterans begin their transition back to the civilian workforce, the possibilities of what they can do are endless. Navigating those possibilities, however, can be tricky.
“The military exposes you to situations and experiences that most don’t ever imagine encountering,” Angel said. “The difficult part is finding the right place where one can use that experience to fulfill a career post military.”
Being a veteran-owned business, NBCP Communications Systems knows the challenges other veterans face when transitioning back into military life, especially after lengthy military careers.
“My experience was the perfect fit for NBCP,” Angel said. “Getting to carry over what I’ve learned helped me hit the ground running in this new role I’m in.”
Angel served in the US Army. After 20 years of service, Angel retired.
“As a veteran, I’m representing my service through the work I do,” Angel said. “It’s who I am to uphold those standards not only for NBCP’s benefit, but for the benefit and respect of our clients.”
Angel is NBCP’s Director of Operations and oversees purchasing and installations. His role also includes him building relationships with our DoD partners—a skill he’s honed for years.
“Working with other veterans and active military clients has made my transition back to the civilian workforce less stressful,” Angel said. “The ability to communicate and understand the military clients’ needs and mission requirements is crucial when you’re building working relationships.”
While Angel’s transition with NBCP has been a perfect fit, not all veterans have the same luck.
“Each year, approximately 200,000 individuals transition out of the military, often without immediate job prospects. Employment assistance ranks among the top requested resources by veterans and Hire Heroes USA proudly provides our career services at no cost,” said Elena Comperatore, Director of Client Service Delivery at Hire Heroes USA.
Hire Heroes USA is a non-profit that connects veteran job seekers with employers. Since they’ve started their mission, the group estimates they’ve confirmed 85k hires.
"At Hire Heroes USA, we provide specialized career programs like our Junior Enlisted, Federal and Women Veterans programs,” said Elena. “Our approach is centered on delivering personalized support and nurturing career development for long-term success.”
For some veterans, a transition into civilian life and the workforce means a completely new start and career. With the help of Hire Heroes USA, those veterans and their spouses can get in touch with training that helps them find that new start.
“We offer a variety of resources for veterans and military spouses. Those resources include career webinars, virtual career fairs and access to the Hire Heroes USA Job Board,“ said Elena.
Hire Heroes USA also offers a variety of services outside of their extensive job board. These services include career coaching, resume writing, mock interviews and even mentoring.
“Having a support system behind you when you’re transitioning can only help you be more successful,” Angel said. “Knowing there are resources available to us after our service is invaluable.”
Hire Heroes USA is helping veterans make sure their careers don’t end after their first job. They’re mentoring program brings in alumni from the organization to help other veterans who were in their shoes at one time.
“It’s important that we spread awareness that organizations like this exist,” Angel said. “Their encouragement and guidance are providing a very important service.”
